The MacNicol Alternative Asset Trust earned a 1.4% investment return, net of fees, for the quarter ending September 30, 2023. The investment environment was defined by persistent inflation, resilient economic data, and rising interest rates across the United States and Canada. The fund was mainly higher due to strong private real estate and hedge fund returns. During the third quarter, the Trust realized two notable exit transactions, and made a number of new investments.

The goals of the Alternative Trust are to generate attractive risk-adjusted returns and help alleviate investor reliance on public market investments. To meet this goal, the fund invests with a long investment horizon in real estate, private equity, and hedge funds. In total, the trust is invested in more than 150 separate real estate projects, private businesses, and hedge funds. The advantages of our approach to alternative assets include effective diversification, enhanced liquidity, and less volatile returns profile compared to the individual asset classes themselves.

This investment strategy has produced excellent long-term results. Over the 14 years the fund has been open, the fund returned 10.2% per year with only 6.8% volatility.
